RUSHALL Olympic were made to pay for missed first half chances as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at play-off hopefuls, Grantham Town.
It was a bright start by The Pics, much the same as the weather, as firstly George Bowerman lifted the ball over the advancing ‘keeper early on only to see his effort cleared from in front of goal before a strike from Danico Johnson was blocked.
Some neat approach play from the hosts ended with Jeremiah Dasaolu heading just wide of the target then Harry Clifton burst into the area only to be denied by Sam Arnold.
Having originally lost the ball in the glare of the sun, Arnold recovered well to save from Lee Shaw as the home side started to up the pressure.
On 37 minutes Isaac Cooper delivered an inviting free-kick into the danger zone and as the ball was only half-cleared, Johnson saw his strike from the edge of the area bravely blocked. Then good link-up play between Luke Bottomer and Mickael Partodikromo ended with the latter seeing his cross just evade Bowerman in the middle.
The half ended as it had started, with a great chance for Bowerman which was saved at close range by Preston.
A low effort from Clifton early in the second half saw Arnold get down well to turn the ball around the post.
The home side took the lead on 57 minutes when Rushall lost the ball as they tried to bring it out of defence and Lee Shaw was able to take advantage as he slotted home.
They managed to double their advantage with 20 minutes to go when a cross from the left was cleared into the path of skipper, Stefan Galinski who fired home through a crowd of players.
In the closing stages, The Pics managed to pull a goal back when an inviting cross from Stan Mugisha was headed home by Smikle.
It set up a tense finish but the home side managed to hold on to claim the points as they remain in the play-off hunt.
