RUSHALL Olympic’s first game of 2017 ended in disappointment with a 2-0 reverse at Workington.
There was a chance for the hosts with just two minutes on the clock when Connor Tinnion played through Jack Ryan who was denied by a great double save from Jose Veiga as Nathan Waterston put the rebound wide.
With 11 minutes on the clock a header from Scott Allison landed just wide for the home side who look the most likely in the opening exchanges.
Veiga made another good save to deny a strike from Rob Wilson on 20 minutes before Ryan went close with an acrobatic effort shortly afterwards.
A probing pass from Luke Bottomer saw Aaron Taylor come a long way from his goal to clear ahead of Josh McKenzie as The Pics started to get into their stride.
Two goals in as many minutes put the home side well in command when a Tinnion free-kick was headed home by Kyle May on 36 minutes before Tinnion swept home the second after the ball was flicked on to him.
Some good positive play from Zak Martin saw him feed McKenzie who was brought down on the edge of the area only for Jazz Luckie’s free-kick to hit the defensive wall.
On a miserable day for The Pics, Lee Smith was sent off on 52 minutes for a two-footed challenge.
A low drive from Anthony Wright was well saved by Veiga as the Cumbrian mist started to roll in.
There was a great chance for James Earl at the far post but he blazed well over from a good position after Dave Symington put over an inviting ball into the area.
A positive run towards goal from the lively Tinnion ended with him hitting the woodwork as the home side looked to increase their lead late on but it ended in a deserved 2-0 win for the hosts.
