RUSHALL Olympic started the season with a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Workington.
It was the visitors who took an early lead when an inviting free-kick was played into the danger zone by Jacob Simpson and James Earl was on hand to plant a firm header beyond the despairing dive of Jose Veiga with just five minutes on the clock.
Rushall looked to hit back at the other end shortly afterwards when Danny Dubidat’s free-kick out wide was headed back across the face of goal by Joel Kettle but the visitors were able to scramble clear.
With the visitors looking the sharper of the two teams in the opening exchanges, Simpson saw his powerful low drive pushed out well by debutant ‘keeper Veiga.
At the other end, a towering header from Henry Eze saw Aaron Taylor have to be alert to push the ball around the post.
Some good link-up play between Aaron Forde and Zak Martin on the half-hour mark saw the latter break into the area only for the ‘keeper to block his effort as Alex Reid put the rebound wide under pressure.
A free-kick in a dangerous position for the visitors saw David Symington curl his effort onto the top of the crossbar with ten minutes to go until the break.
The closing stages of the opening period saw the home side start to see more of the ball without threatening the Workington goal and it was the visitors who went in at the break leading 1-0.
There were early shouts for a penalty for the home side when Martin’s free-kick into the area caused problems and as the ball fell loose, Josh McKenzie fired over.
Despite Rushall seeing more of the ball as the half went on, it was the visitors who broke away to grab a second goal on 71 minutes as Tom Kilifin flicked the ball on for Scott Allison to lift the ball over the advancing Veiga.
Rushall pulled a goal back on 77 minutes when a ball in from the left was not properly cleared by the visitors’ defence and Alex Reid was on hand to fire home from close range.
An inviting free-kick from Bilal Yafai found the head of Eze at the far post in the closing stages but Taylor in the away goal did well to hold as the visitors secured an opening day victory.
