Match Report

THE PICS played out an entertaining Staffordshire Senior Cup quarter-final with Stoke City as the Premier League side eventually ran out 5-3 winners.
The opening exchanges created very little in the way of goalscoring opportunities as Luke Bottomer saw a deflected cross cause concern for the ‘keeper whilst at the other end a stinging drive from distance by Jake Dunwoody was well gathered by Jose Veiga.
A neat through-ball from Josh McKenzie looked to set Jazz Luckie racing away but visiting ‘keeper Harry Isted was alert to clear outside his area.
There was a chance for Stoke when Jack Devlin beat the offside trap only to screw his effort well wide of the target.
The Pics went close on the half-hour when Mickael Partodikromo fed Zak Martin who fired inches wide, but it wasn’t long before the opening goal arrived when some neat build-up play ended with Aaron Forde lashing home on 33 minutes.
The lead lasted just a couple of minutes before George Waring saw his initial effort saved by Veiga but he was on hand to find the net from close range.
Stoke managed to turn the scoreline on its head before the break when a low cross from the right was seized upon by Devlin to make it 2-1.
There was an important clearance off the line from Sam Whittall to deny Waring who found space following some defensive hesitation.
Rushall got back onto level terms early in the second period when a corner was met with a deft header from McKenzie which found its way home.
The visitors regained the lead on 58 minutes when Dunwoody tried his luck from distance and the ball flew beyond the reach of Veiga.
As the clock ticked down, The Pics won a penalty when Harry Souttar handled inside the area and McKenzie stepped up to coolly slot home. Parity was short-lived as Lewis Banks found the net straight away to put The Potters back in front within a minute.
With their superior fitness starting to tell, Stoke extended their lead late on when Waring lifted the ball over the ‘keeper to make it 5-3.
