RUSHALL Olympic let a half-time lead slip to go down to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Matlock Town.
It was a strong start by the hosts and they went close on four minutes when a neat move ended with Niall McManus drilling the ball invitingly across the face of goal but no-one was on hand to apply the finish.
There was a chance for Rushall on 17 minutes when Isaac Cooper’s through-ball picked out Aaron Forde and his low strike was saved by the ‘keeper.
Having started to get into their stride, The Pics took the lead on 24 minutes when some positive play out wide on the left by Cooper ended with him feeding Danico Johnson who turned well before slotting home.
As the home side searched for a leveller, Rhys Sharpe went close from distance before some good covering from Aris Christophorou saw him deny Marcus Dinanga.
The second half started with chances at either end as Adam Yates was alert to clear a Johnson through-ball in search of Forde and then a dangerous cross from the right saw Jose Veiga save well as the ball deflected off the head of his own player.
After Dinanga went close in front of goal, he then turned provider for the equaliser on 64 minutes as his effort was parried by Veiga into the path of McManus who made no mistake.
The end-to-end nature of the game continued when Marc Newsham put the ball across the face of goal with Veiga beaten before Rushall’s break-away ended with Johnson rattling the woodwork as Phil Barnes in the home goal was rooted to the spot.
Matlock took the lead with five minutes to go when The Pics failed to clear their lines and as the ball came back in, Dwayne Wiley was on hand to plant a header home.
In the wake of the goal, Rushall almost levelled when Jazz Luckie was denied at close range by a superb reflex save from Phil Barnes, who then pushed over a Joe Hull effort in stoppage time to earn his side the points.
